Product Description & Scientific Applications

1-Bromo-4-iodobenzene (C₆H₄BrI) has an iodine atom and a bromine atom at para positions of a benzene ring.

Amination. 1-Bromo-4-iodobenzene is aminated catalytically with high selectivity at the C–I bond. With toluidine, the product is the 4-bromodiarylamine.

Ketone synthesis. Under mechanochemical conditions, calcium inserts into the C–I bond without affecting the C–Br bond, and reaction with a carboxylic acid gives the ketone.

Negishi coupling. 1-Bromo-4-iodobenzene was the substrate used to demonstrate sequential, chemoselective coupling with a CoBr₂/DMAc catalyst system.

Sulfonylation. For 1,4-disulfonylation, 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene is a better substrate for sequential coupling than 1,4-diiodobenzene.

Carbon-11 labelling. Under palladium-mediated conditions optimised for aryl iodides, the aryl bromide does not react. 1-Bromo-4-iodobenzene can therefore be used as a starting material for [carbonyl-¹¹C]acyl amidines.

Polymer-supported phosphine. ROMPgel-supported triphenylphosphine is made in three steps from norbornadiene, 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene and chlorodiphenylphosphine.

Luminescent co-crystals. With pyromellitic diimide, 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene forms a 1:1 co-crystal in which it is the heavy-atom donor. The crystals show intense green emission, while donor and acceptor alone are weakly emissive.

Selectivity limit. In copper-catalysed N-arylation of N-acetylhistidine methyl ester, 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene gives a mixture of bromophenyl and iodophenyl products, so coupling takes place at both halogens.
