Product Description & Scientific Applications
2,5-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde bearing methoxy groups at the 2- and 5-positions — ortho and meta to the carbonyl, and para to one another. That para relationship makes the ring a protected hydroquinone, and most of the compound's synthetic use turns on it.
Applications and Reactions
- Regioselective nitration: converting the aldehyde to its gem-diacetoxy derivative with acetic anhydride directs a subsequent nitric-acid nitration cleanly to the 4-position, giving a one-pot route to a single nitro regioisomer rather than a mixture.
- Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons olefination: condensation with benzylphosphonates under potassium tert-butoxide in DMF at 0 °C gives E-configured dimethoxystilbenes — 86% with a dihexylphenyl phosphonate and 91% with the 4-bromophenyl analogue.
- Route to hydroxyanthraquinones: coupled with an N,N-diethylbenzamide intermediate, then reductively cleaved and ring-closed to a hydroxyanthracene, which is carried on by oxidation and O-demethylation to the anthraquinone.
