Product Description & Scientific Applications

Fast Green FCF is an anionic green dye and a food colorant, also called Food Green 3, Green 1724, and Solid Green FCF. Its absorption maximum lies between 622 and 626 nm.

Fast Green FCF improves the visualization of the extracellular matrix in ex vivo fluorescence confocal microscopy. Paired with acridine orange as a nuclear stain, it sharpens structural detail, enhances the analysis of fibrosis, and yields morphological detail equivalent to or better than frozen sections in most categories. The rapid protocol suits intraoperative microscopy.

In histology the dye is the green counterstain of the Sirius Red/Fast Green method. Sirius Red stains collagen fibres red and Fast Green stains the non-collagenous components green; the collagen stands out for both qualitative inspection and quantitative morphometric image analysis. The combination resolves even thin collagen networks and, in normal and inflamed colon, detects collagen more sensitively than van Gieson or Sirius Red alone.

The dye also stains histones at alkaline pH after acid extraction of DNA, and stains proteins separated by electrophoresis.

In water-treatment research the dye serves as a model anionic colorant, and its concentration in solution is read by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry at 625 nm. A range of low-cost adsorbents, among them de-oiled soya, bottom ash, peanut hull, and coffee husk, remove it from aqueous solution.
