Product Description & Scientific Applications

L-Cysteine is a sulfur-containing proteinogenic amino acid that is incorporated into proteins as directed by the genetic code. In proteins, cysteine provides the disulfide linkage.

Its thiol side chain takes part in a variety of oxidation–reduction reactions within the cell. L-Cysteine is an essential precursor of inorganic sulfate and coenzyme A, and it is essential and limiting for the formation of the antioxidant glutathione within the cell. Cysteine is also involved in the formation of hydrogen sulfide, which is used as a signalling molecule.

Thiol–maleimide chemistry. L-Cysteine has been used to quench unreacted maleimide during antibody grafting. Its reaction with 6-maleimidohexanoic acid is a Michael-type thiol–maleimide addition.

General reaction: L-cysteine + N-substituted maleimide → thioether adduct (Michael-type thiol–maleimide addition).

S-Nitrosylation. L-Cysteine has been used to prepare S-nitrosocysteine stock solutions, which induce S-nitrosylation as a reversible cysteine modification.

Thiazolidine synthesis. L-Cysteine, aldehydes and 3-(acetylsulfanyl)propionyl chloride have been used to prepare 2-substituted (2R,4R)-3-(3-mercaptopropionyl)thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acids.

Raw material for cysteine derivatives. L-Cysteine is a key raw material for the manufacture of N-acetyl-L-cysteine and S-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine.
