Product Description & Scientific Applications
Lithium Carbonate (Li₂CO₃) is a mild inorganic base and a laboratory lithium source.
Enzyme inhibition. The lithium ion inhibits inositol monophosphatase and inositol polyphosphate-1-phosphatase, glycogen synthase kinase-3 and adenylate cyclase. The inhibition is attributed to competition between Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ for magnesium binding sites, which is what these otherwise unrelated targets have in common.
Physical behaviour. Its water solubility falls as temperature rises — 1.54 g per 100 mL at 0 °C against 0.69 at 100 °C — the inverse of most alkali metal salts and the basis for purification by hot-water precipitation. It is not deliquescent and is stable in air, unlike lithium chloride.
Molten carbonate systems. At 1060 K the melt has a heat capacity of 2.56 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹ and a thermal conductivity of 2.16 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹.
