Product Description & Scientific Applications

9-Mesityl-10-methylacridinium tetrafluoroborate (Acr+-Mes) is an organic photoredox catalyst, originally developed as a model of the photosynthetic reaction centre to mimic the long lifetime of its charge-separated state. Acridinium derivatives have extended conjugated systems and absorb light in the visible region. Its oxidation potential of +2.18 V versus SCE makes it one of the most oxidising organophotocatalysts. Photoexcitation gives an electron-transfer state (Acr•-Mes•+) of 2.37 eV, formed in close to unit quantum yield (98%), with a virtually infinite lifetime at 77 K. In 2004 Fukuzumi introduced the mesityl group at the C9 position, increasing stability by blocking nucleophile and radical addition.

The catalyst oxidises arenes by single-electron transfer to the corresponding radical cations. It drives the intramolecular hydroetherification of alkenols, the intermolecular hydroamination of alkenes and the anti-Markovnikov hydroazidation of activated olefins. With a disulfide it achieves the decarboxylative reduction of amino acids and hydroxy acids. It generates carbon-centred radicals from allylic and benzylic C–H bonds for Giese reactions.
