Product Description & Scientific Applications
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is the precursor of FMN and FAD, the prosthetic groups of the oxidation-reduction enzymes known as flavoproteins. In water, its neutral form fluoresces with a quantum yield of about 0.26 above pH 4, and this fluorescence decreases strongly below pH 4.
Stability. The dry solid is stable to diffuse light, but riboflavin is highly photolabile in solution and unstable in alkaline solution. Neutral and acidic solutions are stable in the dark.
Flavin cofactor synthesis. A bifunctional FAD synthetase converts riboflavin first to FMN and then to FAD. This route gives isotopically labelled FAD, used to study flavin-dependent thymidylate synthase.
Hydrogel crosslinking. With arginine as co-initiator, riboflavin is a natural photoinitiator for gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels crosslinked by visible light.
Photocatalysis. Riboflavin mediates a highly (Z)-selective, catalytic E→Z isomerisation of activated olefins.
Cell culture media. Riboflavin is a supplement in cell and embryo culture media and in bacterial basal media. In light-exposed medium, riboflavin with tryptophan or tyrosine is required to form hydrogen peroxide at levels lethal to human cells.
