Product Description & Scientific Applications
Silver trifluoromethanesulfonate (silver triflate, AgOTf) is the silver(I) salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. In organic synthesis it is used as a source of silver ions that remove halides, as a triflating agent, and as a catalyst.
Halide abstraction. Silver triflate removes halide ions from organic halides and from metal halide complexes, and the silver halide precipitates. With organic halides this gives triflates or reactive cationic species, such as electrophilic onium ions. With chlororhodium complexes it gives cationic rhodium catalysts, which are used, for example, in the hydrophosphination of alkynes.
Halide abstraction: silver triflate converts an organic halide R–X (X = Cl, Br, I) into the triflate, and the silver halide precipitates.
Glycosylation. In carbohydrate chemistry, silver triflate is combined with halogen electrophiles such as iodine monochloride to activate thioglycoside donors, which then react with sugar acceptors to give O-glycosides.
Hydrosilylation of aldehydes. Silver triflate, alone or with a phosphine or N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, catalyses the chemoselective hydrosilylation of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes to silyl ethers.
Hydrosilylation of an aldehyde (left) with a hydrosilane gives the silyl ether of the primary alcohol (right).
Other reported uses. Silver triflate also promotes Friedel–Crafts reactions, the cyclisation of nucleophiles onto alkenes, and esterification reactions. It is used in the etherification of alcohols with primary alkyl halides, and in the conversion of secondary phosphates and thiophosphates into alkenes.
